WHAT TO DO IF YOU SEE SOMEONE HAVING A SEIZURE
- First and most important - Don’t panic !
- As a seizure begins, hold the persons hand and talk to them, the gripping sensation may stop the electrical charge from spreading across the brain, preventing the absence or partial seizure from becoming a more serious generalized tonic-clonic seizure.
- Do not try to put or force anything between the teeth or into the mouth.
- Do not try to stop the convulsions (jerky movements), make the area safe around them so they do not injure themselves.
- If they are on the floor try to put them on their left side in the recovery position. This is so that they don’t choke if they vomit.
- Kneel behind them whilst supporting their body and protect their head from injury. This will prevent them biting their tongue or choking.
- Time the seizure. Medication may need to be administered if it is longer than 10 minutes.
- Stay with them until they fully recover.
- Do not try to make them regain consciousness.
- Do not leave them alone, even to get help.
- When they regain consciousness it is very common for them to want to sleep.
- Check for injuries. They may have cut or hit themselves.
